What is the cost of a Federal Firearms License?

Other than the Federal Firearms License requirements, prospective FFL licensees may want to know the actual FFL cost by Type of license as well as any additional associated costs. The ATF License application costs will vary according to the FFL license Types as well as any additional associated costs such as Special Occupational Tax (S.O.T.) or registration with the U.S. State Department.

Depending on the Type of license and the additional cost associated with specific FFL Types, the costs can range from $30 to $3000. But, don’t worry, you are probably not in the latter category. The vast majority of federal firearms licensees will pay between $150 and $200 per license.

Federal Firearms License FFL License Obtaining FFL

Do I need a Type 01 Dealers license to sell the firearms I manufacture or import?

It is not necessary to secure a Type 01 “Dealer’s” FFL if the licensee is conducting business under a Type 07 or Type 08 FFL and will deal in the same type of firearms authorized to be imported or manufactured.

Below you’ll find some of the more common scenarios and the associated FFL costs.

Type 01 /02 Dealer in Firearms Other Than destructive Devices:

This is the most common license acquired by the general public seeking to engage in the firearms business.

License Fee: $200

This license includes authorization for “Pawnbrokers” to engage in dealing in firearms. The Type 01/02 license also allows licensees to engage in the business as a dealer in NFA firearms once the Special Occupational Tax (S.O.T Class 3) is paid.

Some confusion exists regarding the term “Class 3 license”. See the article linked here for more information on that topic. There is no “Class 3 License” that must be obtained. ATF will issue a Type 01 Federal Firearms License and the licensee is required to pay a Class 3 S.O.T. prior to engaging as a dealer in NFA firearms (machine guns, suppressors, SBRs and others).

License Fee: $150

Depending on the Type of firearms manufactured, the FFL may be required to register with the U.S. Department of State. A registration fee of $2,250 would be required in the event that the FFL would have to register.

A Special Occupational Tax (S.O.T.) would also be required if the FFL wants to manufacture firearms regulated under the National Firearms Act (NFA).
